Pastor Adeboye Biography

Growing Up

Enoch Adeboye was born on the 2nd of March, 1942 in Ifewara, Osun state. His father was a peasant farmer who did not believe in educating any of his children, probably due to the fact that the family was so poor that they could not afford to pay the school fees. Enoch was so determined about receiving a formal education and had to go on a hunger strike in a bid to persuade his father when his requests to be sent to school were dismissed by him.

After convincing his dad to send him to school, his father had to sell his goat to pay for his son’s tuition fees. Enoch started school quite late and was enrolled at the only missionary school in their village. His passion for reading increased greatly with time. In 1956, Enoch proceeded to Ilesa Grammar School, Ilesha, Osun State, Western Nigeria where he discovered his passion for science and mathematics. The Civil War that broke out in Nigeria that year threatened his dire passion to pursue higher education due to the precarious financial situation of his family as of then. Despite this, he decided not to relent in chasing his dreams, Enoch went on to obtain a Bachelor’s (BSc.) degree in Mathematics from the University of Nigeria, Nnsukka, Nigeria in 1967 after which he proceeded to the University of Lagos to further his education where he obtained both a Masters (MSc.) Degree in Hydrodynamics and a Doctorate Degree (PhD) in Applied Mathematics, in 1969 and 1975 respectively.

He was a lecturer of mathematics at the University of Lagos and the University of Ilorin.

After giving his life to Christ on 29th July 1973, Enoch joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God where he served as an interpreter to Pastor Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, the founder of the church who could only preach in the Yoruba Language. He was later ordained a pastor in 1977. In 1987, Enoch Adeboye was ordained as the General Overseer of the church following the death of the founder, Pastor Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi.
