Priyanka Chopra Jonas is an Indian actress and producer. She was the winner of the Miss World 2000 pageant and one of India’s highest-paid actresses. She is also one of the world’s most powerful and influential women.

Priyanka Chopra was born on 18th July 1982 in Jamshedpur, Bihar now known as Jharkhand, to parents Ashok and Madhu Chopra who are both physicians in the Indian Army. Her father was a Punjabi Hindu from Ambala while her mother, Madhu Chopra is from Jharkhand and the eldest daughter of Dr. Manohar Kishan Akhouri and Madhu Jyotsna Akhouri, a former Congress veteran and a former member of Bihar Legislative Assembly. Chopra has a younger brother, Siddharth. Her cousins Parineeti Chopra, Meera Chopra, and Mannara Chopra are also Bollywood actresses.

As a result of her parents’ professions as military physicians, the family was posted in different places in India and they relocated several times to places including Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala, Ladakh, Lucknow, Bareilly, and Pune. Among the schools she attended were La Martiniere Girls’ School in Lucknow and St. Maria Goretti College in Bareilly.

Chopra moved to the United States to study at the age of 13, she lived with her aunt and attended schools in Newton, Massachusetts, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after a stop in Queens, New York, as her aunt’s family also moved often. During her stay in Massachusetts, she partook in many theater productions, and also studied Western classical music, and choral singing.

As a young brown girl in the United States, Chopra sometimes encountered racial issues and was bullied for being Indian.

Chopra participated in and won the local May Queen beauty pageant, after which she was pursued by suitors that her family had to equip their home with bars for her protection. Her mother registered her in the Femina Miss India contest of 2000 which she came in second. Chopra then contested in the Miss World pageant, where she was crowned Miss World 2000 and Miss World Continental Queen of Beauty—Asia & Oceania at the Millennium Dome in London on 30 November 2000. Chopra had enrolled in a college but left after winning the Miss World pageant.

After Chopra won Miss India World, she was offered many acting roles. She made her screen debut in the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan. In 2003, she made her Bollywood film debut in Anil Sharma’s The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. She went on to feature in several other films and shows after these two breaking records and earning fame along the way.

In 2015, Chopra signed a talent-holding deal with ABC Studios and joined the cast of the American thriller series Quantico portraying Alex Parrish. The series premiered on 27 September 2015 on ABC, making Chopra the first South Asian to headline an American network drama series. In 2020, Chopra was cast in the Netflix kids’ superhero film We Can Be Heroes directed by Robert Rodriguez.

Chopra is also a singer and she used her musical talent in her pageantry days. Her first recording was the song titled “Ullathai Killathe” in the Tamil film Thamizhan in 2002. She recorded an unreleased song for the 2005 film Bluffmaster! In 2011, Universal Music Group signed Chopra to a worldwide recording agreement with DesiHits. In July 2012, she was signed by Creative Artists Agency, an entertainment and sports agency based in Los Angeles. Her first single, “In My City”, was released in the US on 13th September 2012 in a TV spot for the NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football.

A short version of the song was used to open each show of the season. “In My City” features rapper will.i.am. In July 2013, Chopra’s Second single “Exotic” was released, featuring American rapper Pitbull, followed by her third single, a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” which was released in April 2014. In 2017, Chopra worked together with the Australian DJ Will Sparks for “Young and Free”, an EDM song that she also wrote.

Chopra established a production company Purple Pebble Pictures focused on producing small-budget films and introducing and promoting new talent in the Indian film industry, particularly regional Indian films.

Chopra is a big tech investor, she invested in a coding education startup called Holberton School and the famous dating and social media app Bumble. The Bumble app was launched in India thanks to Chopra in October 2018.

In March 2021, Chopra opened her restaurant Sona in Manhattan, New York which caters to haute-couture Indian cuisine.

Chopra practices Hinduism and performs a puja every morning at a small shrine consisting of different murtis of Hindu deities in her home, which she even travels with.

Chopra started dating American singer and actor, Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers in May 2018. Jonas proposed to her on 19 July 2018, a day after Chopra’s birthday in Crete, Greece. The couple became engaged in August 2018 in a Punjabi Roka ceremony in Mumbai. In December 2018, they got married at Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur in traditional Hindu and Christian ceremonies. After the marriage, Chopra included Jonas in her legal name and is now addressed as “Priyanka Chopra Jonas”. In 2022, they welcomed their first child, a baby girl via a surrogate
