Rachel Anne Zegler is an American actress and singer. Her first on-screen performance was in the 2021 musical drama West Side Story, which earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. She was also the first actress of Colombian descent to receive the award and, at age 20 the youngest recipient. Zigler is also named among Forbes’ “30 Under 30” 2022 list. Rachel Anne Zegler was born on 3rd May 2001 in Hackensack, New Jersey to parents Gina and Craig Zegler. She was named after the fictional character Rachel Green from the popular show Friends portrayed by Jennifer Aniston. Her mother is of Colombian descent while her father is of Polish descent.
Zigler attended St. Philip the Apostle Preparatory School and later studied at the Catholic all-girls college-preparatory Immaculate Conception High School where she graduated in June 2019.
She started her career as an actress by appearing in different musicals while she was still in High School. She portrayed Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street, and Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical. Zigler also featured as Serena in Legally Blonde, Cosette in Les Misérables, and Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Zigler started her YouTube channel in July 2015. In 2022, the video of herself singing “Shallow”, from A Star Is Born, earned her as much as 12.2 million views on Twitter.
In January 2018, the famous director Steven Spielberg announced an open casting call through his Twitter for a new film adaptation of West Side Story. Sixteen-year-old Zegler, at the time, responded to the casting call by sharing videos of herself singing “Tonight” and “I Feel Pretty”. She was picked from more than 30,000 applicants for the role of Maria, commemorating her film debut. The film was released in December 2021 earning her several accolades from critics and audiences.
Zegler will be appearing in the yet-to-be-released superhero film Shazam! Fury of the Gods and will also play the role of Snow White in the next animated Disney film. She will voice the main character in the animated musical film Spellbound also yet to be released. Zigler has joined the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of the Hunger Games prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes portraying the heroine Lucy Gray Baird.
