Prince Bulo is a South African-based musician, musical composer, arranger, producer, educator, and performing artist who has made waves with his music in South Africa and in Africa generally. He is known for some of his popular songs Uthando, Long Island, Amaweave, Umdali, Number 1, and so many others. 

Biography of Prince Bulo

He was born and raised in Mohlakeng which is a small town in Johannesburg, South Africa and he started music at an early age and he taught himself how to play the keyboard and piano. He was most recognized for his gospel music and contemporary African jazz.

Education

Due to his love for music and passion for art, he made moves to pursue his musical career enrolling at Durban Institute of Technology (DIT). There his love for music was heightened after he coincidentally fell in love with the bass guitar which he then switched to playing. Prince Bulo also proceeded to attend the University of KwaZulu-Natal where he obtained his master’s degree in composition, graduated cum laude in Jazz Composition, Arranging, and Performance in 2010. For his performances, he received SAMRO’s De Waal and Bonham’s awards in 2008.

Prince Bulo has made mind-blowing records with international stars such as Black Coffee, DJ Tira, AKA, OkMalumkoolkat, Tipcee, Dladla Mshunqisi, Qwabe Twins, Joocy, Vanessa Mdee, Distruction Boyz, Naak Musiq Kings of The Weekend (SPHEctactula and DJ Naves), and also Durban’s Finest.

He completed courses on Film Scoring and Orchestration at Berklee College of Music. In the year 2013, he went on to join one of the top leading African-based independent record stables Afrotainment and in 2010, he started a company of his own Prince Bulo Production Pty (Ltd) (PBP). The company will focus on providing film score composing, live music production, publishing, musician staffing, artist development, and studio production.

For his first project, Prince Bulo performed a Jazz trio called Africa Plus which was the first recording he made under the new production company PBP. He has ever since produced 2 albums as a solo dance music producer/artist.

Prince Bulo Career has been not short of successful. He is basically a multi-faceted bass player, musician, producer, and DJ who has made a huge name for himself as one of South Africa’s most sort-out artists, producers, and music directors. His distinguishing talent of been able to swith between genres has gotten him collaborations with top artists like Dwele, Frank McComb, Maysa, Gerald Albright, and Africa Plus, and also contemporary acts like Shekhinah, Afrotraction, and Mi Casa, and so on.

He has also made countless appearances at some of the major music festivals that were hosted in South Africa and they include the Cape Town International Jazz Festival; Freedom Day Festival-Limpopo; Jazz at the Lake-Qwa Qwa; Kimberly Arts Festival; as well as the Durban Blues Festival. He has also toured and performed in top countries like the USA; Canada; and Sweden; Grahamstown Jazz festival; MTN Durban Festival; Freedom Day Arts Festival; Johannesburg Joy of Jazz; Jazz Festival; Awesome Africa; Durban; performing with artists such Afrique; Sibongile Khumalo; Mafikizolo; Young Nations; Darius Brubeck; Neil Gonsalves; Melvin Peters; The Back Brothers; and Karin Bengmark. Due to his versatility, he went on to make several appearances for theatre productions such as ‘Home-grown’, ‘Motown on Deck’, ‘Dolphins by Starlight’, ‘Let’s Hear It for the Boys’ and ‘The Best Party Show.’

Prince Bulo has also gone on extensive tours in countries such as South Africa; Swaziland; the USA; Canada; Argentina; Bolivia; France; Sweden; Qatar; India; DRC; Mozambique; Zimbabwe; Malawi; Netherlands; Denmark; and Swaziland
