Ranbir Kapoor was born on the 28th of September, 1982 to Rishi Kapoor (father) and Neetu Singh (mother) in Bombay, Maharashtra, India, both were actors in the Hindi film industry at that time. Ranbir is the great-grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor and the grandson of actor-director Raj Kapoor. His elder sister, Riddhima was born in 1980 and is an interior and fashion designer. Kapoor was greatly affected as a child by his parents’ troubled marriage. He found solace in films that he saw as an escape from grief.
Kapoor was close to his mother in his early years but had a dysfunctional relationship with his father.

Kapoor was educated at the Bombay Scottish School where performed better in sports, particularly football though he found little interest in academics and would rank low among his peers. Kapoor enrolled for his pre-university education at the H.R. College of Commerce and Economics.
