Nigerian hot diva, Deborah Oluwaseyi Odedere Joshua, widely refererred to as “Seyi Shay” is a popular artiste and songwriter. The 35 year-old Nigerian artiste made a name for herself within the music industry when she produced singles such as; Irawo (2012), Murda (2014), Right Now (2015), Jangilova (2015) and her debut single, Seyi or Shay released in 2015.

However, there is more to this stunning Nigerian artiste than these singles she produced. Even before making a name in the Nigerian music industry, Seyi Shay has been wowing her audience on the international scene as far back as 2006. Her former affiliations with George Martin (A record label manager), a girl band named “Boadicea” and the popular Music band called “From Above”, shaped her into a strong force to reckon with within the music industry both locally and internationally.

Growing Up.

Deborah Oluwaseyi Odedere Joshua was born on the 21st of December 1985 to Nigerian Parents. Although her father hails from Osun state and her Mother from the Northern part of Nigeria, Deborah was born in Tottenham, London. Seyi Shay was brought up by a single parent (her mother), alongside her three elder siblings, two brothers and a sister.

Two major factors influenced Seyi Shay’s music career. The first factor is that she was born into a family that has deep connections with the music world. The second factor is that Seyi Shay herself developed interest in Music at a very young age. She joined her school’s choir at the age of six years and by the age of fourteen she became a member of the London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC).

Seyi Shay also visited her home country (Nigeria) during her childhood years before she finally settled in the country in 2011.

Even though this “international hotshot” had her “basic training” in Tottenham,U.K, she still came to Nigeria for her secondary education. Seyi Shay schooled at Command High School, Maryland, Lagos, then she went back abroad for her tetiary studies.

She holds a degree in Music from a local University college in UK. She also bagged another degree in Business Administration from the University of East London.

 

HOW SEYI SHAY’S CAREER STARTED.

As mentioned above, Seyi Shay developed an interest in Music from a very tender age. Probably thanks to the kind of environment she found herself as a child (The United Kingdom), Seyi Shay was able to come across great opportunities that shaped her music career.

At the age of six years she joined the school’s choir. At fourteen years, this gorgeous diva was already touring countries, all thanks to the “London Community Gospel Choir” (LCGC).

In 2005, Seyi Shay produced three songs for Konami’s video game; “Crime Life; Gang Wars (2005)”.She even signed her first record deal with “No Apology”, although as of that period there was nothing much that could be said about Seyi Shay’s music career. The “then young artiste” still had a long way to go.

In 2006 Seyi Shay formed a girl band called “Boadicea”, however two years later this group came to an end. Seyi Shay found herself in another group ” From Above” after she partaked in a UK singing audition and emerged as one of the winners, the lead vocalist to be precise.

This group, “From Above” was responsible for shaping a great deal of Seyi Shay’s music career. It was in this girl group of five that Seyi Shay discovered her RnB side. Their manager, “Matthew Knowles” who happened to be the famous Beyonce’s father, allowed Seyi Shay and the other girls to explore their “creative sides”.  He also signed Seyi Shay to the record labels; Sony records company and Music Worldwide Entertainment. Much more than that, this group, “From Above” gave Seyi Shay the opportunity to become one of Beyonce’s backup singers, although her time with Beyonce was really brief.

In 2011, Seyi Shay left the group and traveled down to Nigeria to pursue her music career after she was being convinced by the “Naija Ninja”, Sound Sultan who came to London during that period.

Back in Nigeria, Seyi Shay got signed under the record label, “Flytime Music Label” by Cecil Hammond. She released a number of songs shortly after she got signed under the record label. Songs like Loving Your Way, Irawo, Yolo Yolo, and Right Now made her popular within the Nigerian music industry even before 2015.

In 2015, she left Flytime music label and got signed under Universal Island Records. This record label helped to distribute Seyi Shay’s music worldwide, further plunging her into stardom. As of that period, she was also an ambassador for Genevieve Pink Ball Foundation. A foundation that focuses on trying to improve the lives of breast cancer patients.

In January 2021, Seyi Shay signed a record deal with “Universal Music Publishing group; France division”. The record label would be responsible for sponsoring Seyi Shay’s songs both locally and Internationally.
