Growing up
Joeboy christened Joseph Akinwale Akinfewa was born on the 21st of May, 1997 in Lagos State, Nigeria into a Christian and music-oriented family. Joeboy has spent most of his life so far within the confines of Lagos state. This was where he discovered his love and passion for the art of music. Joeboy later went on to release his cover to Ed sheeran’s Shape of you which warmed its way into the heart of Nigerians both locally and those in the diaspora. The cover ended up going viral that it caught the eyes of Mr Eazi, who then decided to offer him a provisional mentorship platform. This was Joeboy’s first strides to limelight.
Mr Eazi, some time ago had just started a revolutionary youth talent development platform for future African musical artistes which he tagged emPawa Africa. This wide service institution was aimed at providing up and coming artistes with loads of opportunities to put their name out there on the globe.
The services provided include Marketing, Publishing, Distribution, management services and labelling. All these things put in place with the aim of giving African artistes an edge by equipping them with the required knowledge, tools, network, and investment. Mr Eazi also initiated African music to the world #empawa100 movement and urged Joeboy to put in an application.
Joeboy obliged, registered and was one of the 10,000 applicants from 14 countries round the continent. After signing up, the first 100 became the recipient of $3,000 aimed at helping these artistes create their own success in the music industry. Joeboy was one of the recipients, and he made his Faaji video clip using the $3,000. After one month of Faaji being a success; ranking in the top ten, Joeboy got selected for a mentorship camp in South Africa. Here, one of two artistes would receive an extra $50,000 to create and push their music brand.
In March 2019, Joeboy dropped his hit single ‘Baby’. The song managed to climb up the ladders to rank first on Apple Music in Nigeria and Uganda. This was the moment when Joeboy’s career heightened.

At the 2019 Headies, Joeboy was nominated the Next Rated, Best pop single, Song of the year and Viewers choice award. Although he didn’t win any, it was a recognition of his talent and industry.
