Elvina Ibru is a popular Nollywood actress and activist championing the cause for women’s rights. Also, she is the daughter of the late Delta-born billionaire businessman, Michael Ibru.

She is also a producer, but her rise to prominence is because of her excellent acting, something she says is a shared trait in her big family. She is a mother of one and is also an outspoken fighter for women’s rights both in Nigeria and globally.

EARLY LIFE

Elvina was born on May 22, 1972, and raised in Lagos. She is her parents’ 11th child, a fact that earned her the nickname “baby.” She had her primary education in Nigeria. Elvina recounted how she climbed the stage for the first time as a 6-year-old to perform a cultural dance. That was the fuel the artistic flames burning in her heart needed.

She would go on to represent her primary school on TV shows like Tales by Moonlight and Kiddies Junction, further deepening her desire to become a performer. Her mother also encouraged her by having her take drama classes whenever possible, and it all helped her during her formative years.

Even when she relocated to England, her passion for all things drama was obvious. Her drama teacher noticed her, and when she aced a test made for 11 year-olds as an 8-year-old, she set a record in that Kent-County school that has never since been broken. She attended the London Academy of Performing Arts, where she earned a degree in Drama.

She went on to study for another degree in International Relations at Webster University in London due to family pressure. However, she never forgot her passion for acting. Before her second degree, she had a stint with the BBC as a voice actor for a scripted children’s show.

On Elvina’s return to Nigeria, she worked as an On-Air Personality on Classic FM, anchoring the 9-12 pm show on the radio station. She was also a talented singer, with some degree of success as a musician before she lost her voice for a while.

Elvina’s impressive talent in drama and acting got noticed on the global stage through her role in “Vagina Monologues” in 2007. The Eve Ensler-produced play opened to the Nigerian stage as part of the activities for International Women’s day in 2007.

Due to her inclination to fight for women’s rights, she took to her role in the play like a duck to water. She even acted in the second version of the play called “Hear Word,” in 2015.

She owns and operates a media production outfit called “2wice As Nice Limited.” The company co-produced the first edition of the Idols West Africa series.
